hi all
i am seriously considering buying a frs but i am wondering if they suffer with any particular common faults as i like the look of them i am looking at starting with a stardard 1 but will eventually be looking to take the power up so just wondering what boost can the engine internals and standard turbo cope with

internals can take at least 300bhp. a friend of mine has one running near 330bhp and i think thats standard internals. i would have said thats as far as anyone would want to go really otherwise it just spins up out of corners and understeers.

Standard turbo will give you 300bhp with the right supporting mods,
engine internals have remained standard on cars with up to 400bhp, but i think about 360-380 is the limit for having their head kicked in on track etc,
hybrid turbo's are available and give a very healthy power upgrade, and can give you 400,
depends on your budget how far you want to take it really,

the charge cooler can get a blocked nozzle so people say best to sitch it and get an intercooler. bushes wear just like any other focus, especially the two rear trailing arm bushes (the two that have the bar going through them and bolt upto the bodywork). just had to do mine on my 2l zetec and by fay the easiest way of doing them is by dropping the whole subframe as the other bolts sieze into the bushes and either dont undoo or rip the bush to shreds and then you still have to chop the bolt to get it out. also i replaced my bush with the energy suspension poly type which can be fitted by hand, with a little persuasion. (anyone requiring info on these and help can pm me)
also if it torque steers excessively the front lower arm bushes are worn so easy fix.
also rust, personally before it starts to rust badyly i'd tidy up all the little bits then book it in for a full rust proofing with rust.co.uk or buy one of their kits and apply it yourself.
i cant remember if the rs has an alloy thermostat housing or not but if it aint its worth upgrading to one as the plastic ones crack and piss coolant out in seconds.
there may be a few more that i cant remember but in the main very good cars, ripe for a tune to 300bhp and i think that would be just about perfect with a decent set of tires!

not a prob, just going on what i know about normal focus and what i've read about the rs.
blower motor's can fail too but its not that common.
imho, regular servicing, dont use cheap pattern parts, good clean up of any rust (including taking off front and rear subframes for a freshen up) and a decent rust profing and then a few coice mods with decent tyres and you will have the perfect mk1 focus rs.
just sell it to me cheap once you've spent the doh sorting it
