Hi lads,

Since there are so much failed pumps around i'd like to ask a question.

Is there anyone who ever dismantled one to see what actually failed?
I'm pretty curious what could be the cause and result of pump failures.

If someone has a failed pump lying about but doesn't want/know how to dismantle it please let me know if you'd like to give it up for science

Would be interesting to know too. Where I work we have a fleet of transit connects and we have only had a few with pump failure. For example out of say 50 vans only 5 have had the pumps changed so not many really.

that's just the thing with internet, you read alot of stories of breakage but obviously everyone driving around without problems won't post it on the internet.

Seems to be Transit/Mondeo pumps that fail more often than the Focus/Connect ones.
Early ones had problems with the 'rollers & 'shoes' in the hi-pressure pump failing and filling the whole system with swarf.

It's the swarf that kills them - As GVK points out it does seem to be the early ones that were the most likely to die. Running them 'dry' definitely did them no favours, as the diesel acts as a lubricant. But ultimately I'd say the fault lies with the pump being badly designed in the first place!

Yeah, any fuel system tests that are recommended by Ford always have a warning of making sure the pump is primed before cranking.

The delphi systems aren't known to be particularely reliable indeed.

Mind you, the Denso system that replaced it on Transits etc, isn't without it's faults too.

I have a Lynx engine in my MK4 Mondeo and there is absolutley no way you can prime the fuel system. There's no lift pump and no hand primer. The only half decent way to do it is to fill the filter bowl with diesel and use easy start to get the engine to spin fast enough to pump all the air out the lines.
Absolute crap design and cringe every time I do it!

Normally use a hand primer in line with the filter when servicing them.

I bought a draper hand primer but there's no way using the attachments that come with it to connect it together. They use a funny connector where you have to pull a pin out to unplug it rather than the usual push fit connectors.

Gary, do you happen to have an exploded view of the delphi pump too?

Ah i see, this is a delphi pump. The only way i can imagine it could fail is if the roller got stuck and starts to wear/break.
