S2 rs turbo still on mfi drove to metrocentre fine then parked up for an hour came out and on start up it spluttered and popped then fired up and idled at~500 rpm for a minute then idled like normal. After about 2 mins it cut out and now won't fire I can't hear the pump prime now either and looking at the purple relay the base looks distorted

As a test to see if it is the relay that's goosed get yourself a bit of cable & bridge the thick brown wire & the black with a red stripe wire in the relay holder.
With this link piece in when you turn your ignition on the fuel pump should run constantly so try & start the car, if it runs you know there's something wrong with the relay.

I wouldn't drive the car with the link wire in though it's purely a way of testing the relay. For a new relay an mfi xr3i one is exactly the same.
