Default rs2000 running problem

Wonder if anyone can help me? I got a escort gti estate which has had a rs2000 engine fitted, all was fine when I bought it but I noticed that there was a leak from the thermostat housing, so I replaced the housing and at the same time tried to fix the temp gauge that wasn't working but ended up shorting it out and blowing the fuse on the curuit for the gauge, since then when I tried to start it its real hard to get it to fire up and when it does you have to have the throttle just right to keep it running, I thought that maybe something unrelated might be at fault as I had already replaced the fuse, I tried the fuel filter and injectors as I thought it might be fuel related but still the same, I tried taking the cat off in case that was blocked but still the same, when I unplug the throttle position sensor it makes no differense to the way the car runs but the idle control valve seems to be working fine I hope somebody can help me!
