Default Wheel offsets, help please

Ok so im getting some new wheels, my offset is ET45, so does that mean that i couldnt use wheels that were 35 for example? do they HAVE to be ET45? i think i know the answer but im just checking.

Anything else i need to check on to make sure im buying wheels that will fit properly?

it depends on the car, wheel/tyre width and diameter,

normally you can go a bit either way before you catch the suspension or arch lip
