my mk1 cossie runs but is over fueling. i have tried another ecu but it is the same. i have changed the injectors but no difference. when i start the car i have to disconnect the fuel pump so it can fire up. when it runs with out the fuel pump it ticks over high until you connect the fuel pump then it over fuels massively. any ideas

more info needed ie:has it ever been running properly prior now what injectors etc!
@ a guess check fuel pressure from regulator, map sensor can cause o/fueling and so can the coolant temp sender on the head(left side rear) just for starters

the engine was running before i bought it. i stripped it down and rebuilt it. it is running yellow injectors with stage1 chip. i'll try the map sensor and see if it makes a difference

Coolant Temp Sensor Checking - info courtesy of Simon @ SECS
1) Ensure ignition is OFF.
2) Remove rear of ecu plug cover and insert plug back into ecu.
3) Turn ignition back on (do not start engine)
4) Check resistance between pins 29 and 11. Should be 800 to 5000 ohms (depends on temp). If outside this range, check sensor and/or wiring.

i have changed both map sensor and water temp sensor and still the same. the thing that is bugging me most is that i have to turn ignition on and let the fuel pump prime up and then disconnect the pump before i fire it up and when i put the wire back on it over fuels bad. it's ok with the pump disconnected until it runs out of fuel. i have changed all the sensor's,tried different ecu,by past the fuel pump relays and wired the pump to a switch. the only thing i can think of now is either the pump is pumping to much fuel or the engine loom is f**ked. it's really starting to pee me of now....

1. unplug the ECU connector, unscrew the small crosshead screw, and slide the cover off.
2. replace the connector onto the ECU, still with the cover off.
3. switch your ignition on (so the dash lights come on).
4. use the multimeter (switched to measure resistance) to find the resistance between pins 11 and 29 (the pin numbers are on the connector).
5. if the resistance is over 5000 ohms, your wiring needs looking at. Look first at the connector that goes onto the sensor - pull the rubber boot back to make sure that one of the wires hasn't broken, and make sure the pins in the connector are OK.

when you say check between pins 11 and 29 do i put the multimeter in both connections at the same time. for instance red lead in pin 11 and black lead in pin 29. i'm not to good with electrics. i have used cossie regulator and a brand new regulator with built in pressure gauge. both made no difference

i tried the resistance between pins 11 and 29 and it was 809 ohm's. i have changed everything now apart from fuel pump and engine loom. i have another loom coming in a few days so hopefully that might cure it. i set the regulator at 3 and a half bar and it was still overfueling badly. the thing that is bugging me most is that when i try to start it i have to disconnect the fuel pump wire from the ecu and it then fires up. with the wire connected it won't start. when it runs and i connect the fuel pump it overfuels..... i don't know what to try next

tried another set of injectors and no difference. the revs are at about 1500-2000rpm and the engine sounds ok but still overfueling. chucks loads black smoke out the back and stinks of fuel. the engine is fully rebuilt so i know the engine is ok. i can get the revs down lower. when i disconnect the pump while the engine is running it is better but runs out of fuel. i have to turn ignition on to prime the fuel system then disconnect the pump to fire it up then reconnect the pump then it just overfuels

1. have you adjusted the TPS whilst the engine was in bits?
2. are you sure you haven't kinked (and closed up) the fuel return line ?
3. have you adjusted the throttle stop on the throttle body ? (small grub screw)
PS are you 100% positive the resistance was 809 ohms? (Auto-ranging meters can be tricky buggers.) Your symptoms sound exactly the same as happened on a mates car - was the water temp sensor wiring.

i did not touch the tps sensor when i rebuilt the engine. all the fuel lines are ok(there all braided hoses). i have adjusted the tick over screw to get the recs down a bit. my meter deffinately read 809 ohm's. is that ok.
i have another loom on its way

i have been told that cos my fuel pump doe's not have a damper on it that could cause the overfueling but im not sure. what doe's anyone think

got the new loom in and its RUNNING fine now. no overfueling problems. just have to set CO and finish the front brakes and then get it ready for MOT.
