petrol,
but it dos seem to be using a lot of oil lately, if the turbo seals were passing , would the smoke be blue or grey until it was hot? no smoke on boost though

If turbo was leaking very badly it could be light grey smoke. Not blue as normally.
Try giving it some loud pedal and then stop and let it idle for some time - check if it smokes then.
It can smell petrol a bit after starting, mine does. But this can be of course also a sensor failure and overfueling.

yeh yeh, i understand that, but mine warms up normally then the smoke clears, surely if the sensor had failed it would smoke all the time..?
the sensro is there to MAKE it overfuel when colde to get it running and warmed up properly,
just ben for another drive and tried leaving it idleing then floor it, and no smoke (only a tiny whiff) and no smoke on overrun or on boost.
will see how it is in the morning again.
just out of interest , how much is a recon T34 nowerdays..?

If the turbo seals fail on the rear of the turbo, it could be leaking into the exhaust which makes it vapourise rather than burn......
They can be reconned for as little as Ł250 but I wouldn't expect it to last long for that money...

When it leaks REALLY badly sometimes it only smokes when idling for long periods. Mine did that. When driving there was almost no smoke.

stu did comment when setting it up that the turbo was worn, not knackered, just quite worn and would bennefit from a recon one,, perhaps now is the time, the extra boost has maybe finished it off

I would really like to help you but it's hard to know what it is without seeing it. Probably removing downpipe and looking throught engine error codes/logs will tell everything but you need a pro for that I suppose.
