Anyone had any experience with dry ice or the removal of dynamat? I have some that really does not want to come off and quite a lot of it, I saw some posts on other forums suggesting that you can drop the dry ice on, wait for the dynamat to crack and then pull it off.

If not I will stick with a heat gun and pallet knife

I've used dry ice to fit liners into a tractor engine.

I'd imagine the Dynamat shatters when it's iced.

 

I tried a can of plumbers pipe freeze today as an experiment, it goes to minus 50 in 5 mins and the dynamat just broke up BUT it used a Ł22 can to do 1 sq ft. I like the idea of dry ice but will try a heat gun and a pallet knife before I go down that route....I can see fingers breaking off with my medical error history

 

Dry ice is great stuff, we used it loads at my old job. Usually for cocking about with though, we made bombs, froze and shattered loads of different stuff.

 

I take it you have to be careful not to come in to contact with it?

 

A friend of mine used dry ice to remove the stock sound deadening stuff. Worked really well.

 

Yes you had to be very careful. If you touch it for a second or two it will do no harm but any longer than that and you will get a frost burn. We handled it with welding gloves, they weren't made for it but were better than the gloves that were designed for the job!

 

Will have a go on Friday with the heat gun but if I get fed up I will try the dry ice

Dynamat is some sticky shit. I have installed loads of it but never taken it out.

 

Removing it in cold weather is best...once you have managed to peel a corner up, you will be surprised how easy it is to take off...may rip a few times though but it will come off easier when its cold

Alternatively, you can warm it up significantly so the bitumen is very soft and it will pull away easy...will need to wear gloves and may have to remove some bitumen with a flat blade etc (this is avoided if you take it off when it is cold)

 

I can pull this with both hands and it hardly moves, some bits are great but others are a pain....I am finding the heat gun and knife / chisel works but it then sticks to your gloves and rips them

 

Get some old co2 fire extinguishers and give the stuck bits a good blast!

I did wonder about this, 1) what might it cost 2) would it make a mess 3) I assume it must be done outside 4)how do you stop it ruining the paint at the edges...like the sills?

no messier than using a pressure washer. 99% of debris drops to the ground along with the media we use.
3) I assume it must be done outside
better off outside yes, everything around the target gets wet
4)how do you stop it ruining the paint at the edges...like the sills?
our system is very precise, we can blast to within one cm of anything without causing any damage
