Default Failed fuel pump??

Hi guys I picked a mk6 escort up the other day as a non runner

Problem:

the car turns over and fires very briefly before dying (regardless of throttle no throttle)

Things I have checked:

fuel pump fuse ok
relay ok
fuel shut of button is fully depressed

anything I have missed? I cannot hear the pump fire up when the ignition is turned on( which is what I suspect is the problem!).

thanks in advance
Mike

That means the immobiliser has an issue, most likely the key you are using is not coded correctly.

is the red key used for coding further keys? or does it deploy the missiles and oil slick

You will have to let me know haha, but yes you need the master (red) key, as you suggested.

Count how many times the light flashes when cranking as this will give you a fault code. I always thought though that if the immobiliser wasn't deactivated, the car wouldn't even turn over.

Depends on the immobiliser, i.e. how many points of immobilisation. I think PATS does fuel and ignition, hence it will still turn over.

working my way through this slowly! currently waiting for my next day off.

thanks for the help so far.

using the red key the red LED goes out when cranking.

no 12v feed to the fuel pump (orange/violet wire) but there is power to both circuits of the fuel pump relay and It is switching.

is the rollover switch wired before the relay or after?

other than that a broken wire or?? I'm stumped!!

inertia switch maybe in the passenger kick trim panel, may be tripped and killing the pump.

starts runs and dies is usually the immobiliser kicking out.

if the light by the clock is now going out when cranking hopefully the immob is switching off as it should.

try giving the fuel pump a fused temporary live supply to eliminate a broken wire from the inertia switch to the pump.

if the inertia switch is ok and in the reset position (i.e not tripped) and you can make it run from the temporary wire then i would be looking at fuel pump fuses and associated wiring.
