Default have a prob with computer comunicating with ecu

i have a bit of a prob i have mbe managment and the mapping lead my first prob was that the mapping lead was 9 pin and my computer has a 25 pin so i got an adaptor which i am hoping will work now my problem is when i load up easy map it comes up with a little grey box that says

''can't open serial port COM1''

and some other things about another program running which aint and also about another device using the port which it aint so does anyone know a way i can check that my computer is all set up to do this ie: ports configured????

so i can rule that out the equation

i am not ok with computers but not a wiz so will need this in easy to understand instuctions

u should have a com 1, just about every computer has a com 1, i cant think why it isnt displayed unless its been disabled or try pressing delete button or f2 on computer start up right at the start to bring the bios screen up, its hard to say coz there are loads of difference bios screens from computer to computer, but its the same, have a look for com 1 within the bios screen somewhere to see if its says anything.............

xp should pick up the com port from startup if its been deleted, hence why i say it may be disabled or conflicting with another port
