Default Mk4 Escort engine fan not working.

Hello, it's been a while since I have posted on here but I now own a MK4 XR3i. Anyway I took her out for a nice drive and noticed that the cooling fan isn't kicking in. I have tried bridging the connection (at least I think I have, I put a paper clip in the connection from the fan) and the fan didn't run? I have checked the fuse and also the fan spins freely by hand. If possible I want to fix it myself, any ideas?

Check if your getting power first. If you are then you know the fans faulty, if your not then its obviously a wiring issue.

Edit: The above is presuming you bridged it correctly

I am a massive newbie to this lol but really want to learn! So how do I check if I'm getting power? If the fan was faulty could I just replace the motor?

Use a multimeter.

And yes you could just replace the motor/fan unit

So do I just connect a multimeter to the connection that goes to the fan? Is there a relay for the fan?

Take the wiring plug off the fan switch in the radiator, insert paperclip or piece of wire into plug you have just removed, to bridge the 2 wires together. (don't forget to have ignition on)

If it doesn't work, put the black wire of your multimeter to a good earth, and one of the pins in the plug that you have removed should have power. (again check with ignition on)

Try this and see what you have.
