Default 05 Fiesta blower problems

I've been having trouble with my blowers recently.

I gather that the resistor is a common problem, but this seems to cause all settings not to work other than the highest setting.

In my case all of the settings still work, but apart from the top setting they all make a disgusting noise, which sounds roughly like the exhaust pipe has fallen off the car.

The top setting doesn't sound entirely healthy either, but isn't too bad.

Is it plausible that this could be a resistor problem too? Or is it more likely to be the motor? And if the latter, is there anything that I can do about it before forking out for a new motor?

Cheers
