To start with it had a problem with one of the relays clicking (small blue one) slow then faster as the revs got higher this seemed to cause a misfire, then all of a sudden it would stop pick up again and throw out a ploom of black smoke(overfueling) . so i had a fault code reader put on it and it came up with the codes 01,31,81 put a thread up as i had no tech data on the codes and stu said 01, doesn't exist 31 was "memory failure so its chipped with some problem" and 81 was "egr valve dont ask ". So tonight after reading this i thought i would check the ecu as wwhen i bought the car the guy said it was standard it fookin wasnt so ive now taken chip out and the car is running better than ever so it seems all sorted now but thanks to everyone for the help

The memory will need to be wiped clean mate.. make sure thats done asap or it will be running on the wrong base strategy.

Basically, the ECU learns the best settings for various conditions, programs this to the ecu and then runs from this new "Base strategy"

Ther settings its using will be related to the chip you had fitted, so it should ideally be reset.

Depends on its technical capabilities, good ones can do it, yes, they are in fact the only way to do it.

stu,
can you confirm that the escort cosworth EEC4 is a two digit code ecu, as
the above seem two indicate this, as i thought may be 3,digit.

TO CLEAR TO KAM on a eeciv, just leave the battery disconnected for around 10 mins, then let it idle for 2 mins, then 2 mins at fast idle (1500rpm) then drive for 5 miles to complete its learing process - this is stated in the cosworth workshop manual and IS NOT for webber/martelli equipt cars.
