Default 2007 Mk3 Electrohydraulic Power Steering Problem

Hi all,

This is my first post - I was directed here by a helpful chap at Opieoils. The power assistance disappears intermittently at parking speeds. We've had the car from new and it's done 50k. I flushed the fluid with the Ford spec green oil (not ATF) and cleaned the in-reservoir filter while I was at it and that seemed to sort things out for a while. The filter was black with gunge and needed a toothbrush to get it clean. There is no light on the dash and it's fine at any speed except parking when assistance is greatest.

Does anybody have some tips on what to try next in terms of diagnosis? I don't mind fitting a new pump or rack if that's what is wrong but having Googled this issue there appear to be plenty of owners who spend 1000's on the dealers advice to no avail.

My thoughts are:

1. Try another PAS fluid - maybe thinner would be easier for the pump.

2. Check all wiring as the pump may be getting a reduced feed if the connections are iffy.

3. I believe there is a pressure sensor in the system somewhere - I can't see it in the rack so must be the pump. Do they play up?

I can't think of anything else except replacing the major components such as pump and rack - are there aftermarket suppliers of such things as Ford wnat a small fortune. This system is used on other models so the issue is not likely to be confined to Galaxys.

Many thanks for any help.

Huw.

Thanks both,

the positive side of the alternator circuit is fine ~0.3 voltage drop to battery positive terminal. I got zero voltage drop between the alternator casing and the negative battery terminal which seems unlikely - maybe it is mounted on rubber bushes with a separate earth strap (I'll check).

Alternator output with everything switched on is 14.5 volts though it does drop at full lock when held against the steering stops to 13.8 volts - significant? The loss of assistance can happen anywhere in the steering range not just at full lock.

The connections to the motor/pump need the front bumper off so I'm waiting for better weather.
