Default knocing engine

just started my cossie engine the othewr day that i have rebuilt and it is knocking it sounds just like a diesel, before i rebuilt this engine it was making this noise after just swapping the head but now i have replaced the crank, all bearings, bolts, rings, gakets, infact the only parts still from the old engine are the BLOCK,RODS AND PISTONS they are all in good nick.so the only reason i can see for the noise is that the TIMING.

i set the boittom pulley to the lug before the groove, the top pulleys to each other and the aux pulley to the middle of the half moon.
i'm sure this is right but i can't think what else it caqn be this engine has been killing me 4 nearly 2 years and there is not much else i can replace.

after it had made this noise before i noticed slight marks on the pistons from the valves ,but like i say the timing looks bob on..

maybe someone can shed some light on it.. cheers

Piston slap has a slight diesel sound to it when cold but should quieten down once warmed up. Would be a shame if it is piston slap seeing as you replaced everything else on the bottom end.

the head has not been skimmed and has been checked by the local engineering firm....

it is much loader than piston slap, it sounds just like the pistind tapping the valves .

Move the crank position to the "Groove " itself , not the lug before !

do not move crank to groove or the valves will hit the pistons

this has entered my mind but the noise is just like an old bus really load i would of thopught far to load to be that..

the first time this started i had just changed the head gasket wen i started it it was perfectly quite, i drove down the ro0ad as i was driving it was getting loader and loader, by the time i got about 10 miles it was so load and shaking i had to tow it home, thats wen i stripped it, first thinking it was top end, then sow that the bearibgs were ready, i don't know what else can where that fast, cheers

Default noise

HI.

When you changed the head did you change it complete with
cam followers, cam and valves, or stripped yours if you used your parts
did you keep the cam followers in order to the cam lobes for your cams
or put in any new followers, if so did you run the cam in to them.
and the valve timing the lug you used is the edge of the lug to the
pointer left part of lug. ps before u strip it again? do a compression test.
and what is your oil pressure like as you have new bearings, should be good if pump is ok.
maybe the bearings are the wrong size.for the crank mains or bigends.
Dave.
