could there be any breaks? i will have to take apart my dash again and follow it
ignition lights on but no power to the starter when turned full way
the starter is fine and a wire run from the spud to the battery turns over no problem

Not entirely sane
Have a look at the single plug just by the front of the battery tray, this is the starter solenoid wire from the car loom down to the starter. It could also be the starter inhibitor relay (not just on automatics like the Haynes book of lies says), IIRC, it is the big relay, front left of the fusebox. Mine quit the other day, it would crank if you flashed the starter direct from the battery but not turn on the key.

Also I assume this was on a different car, as OP'S car does not have a starter relay.

Both of my 1992 manual cars have this relay, the estate is DOHC and the 2.9 twin turbo used to be DOHC.
The wiring diagrams in the Haynes book show the relay for auto or a jumper for manual and label the relay as Auto Trans Relay XII.
I'm not 100% on the position in the fusebox but relay XII is identified on the diagram in the fusebox lid.

i swapped all the relays with a sister car but no joy
but right enough you may be on to something with the switch for the automatics
see the car was pinto originally so i totally rewired the whole thing for a twincam engine every piece of loom was changed
the donor car was a twincam hatchback diff car that was wrecked and the engine had blown
it had a manual box in it but the sump was an automatic sump grinded back so the starter would fit

Martin, it's correct that only the auto cars have the inhibitor SWITCH but manual DOHC cars from 1990 on have the same relay XII but it is fed from the EEC IV ECU instead of the inhibitor switch. I know earlier cars had a jumper in the fuse box and no relay.

OP, so you think the donor car was originally an automatic, if so you probably bypassed the switch when it was converted, something you haven't replicated when moving the loom over, perhaps?

id say theyve just disconnected the gearbox wiring off at the plug behind the engine
thanks for all the help folks id say the plug going to the car has maybe extra wires whereas the wire going to the gearbox doesnt
is this just a matter if cramping these extra wires together before the plug?
