Default Tapping Cosworth Part III

Hi all - come to a point now in the new year to have another go at this faint tapping noise on my 4x4 (see https://passionford.com/forum/viewto...apping+lifters for previous!)

I'm going to remove the cyl.head firstly and thoroughly go over all the checks - distortion, check for wear in tappet bores, check valve guides etc..etc..

I've been wondering recently whether the noise is being caused by very faint touching of the valves against pistons - will be fairly obvious once i've got everything off, and i can measure the head height accurately.

Anyone ever had experience of this before? Not enough to cause damage but just the faintest of contact sufficient to cause a noise as the engine slows back to idle?

Rattling on overun just before idle is often little ends rattling or loose piostons.

Thanks Stu, smart idea to get the whole lot out instead then, had considered those also, just going through all the possibilities - nothing better than advice from others who have experienced it. Cheers.

nikh667,
nothing better than advice from others who have experienced it.
Apart from perhaps someone else paying for the cure

Damn right - bottomless pockets req., lottery win would come in handy too.

One point - generally get normal tap from lifters from cold for a second or so - this second noise only occurs AFTER lifters has quietened down - hence led me to think that - lifters fill with oil - valves open more - and then make slight contact.

Anyway, if I rebuild the lot then i'll eliminate it either way - so irrelevant really. Your advice is enough for me not to risk just head work.

2 lucky dips this week........
