Default mk5 fiesta intermittent starter problem

hi, i have a 2000 mk5 ford fiesta with the 1.3ltr endura engine. it has 45000 on the clock but has an intermittent fault with the starter, every now and again when you turn the key the starter motor spins but doesnt engage, normally if you try it again it will start. now i thought it might have been the starter motor, so ive changed that, but the problem still persists. does anyone have anyideas what else it could be or has anyone else had a similar problem?

i was thinking maybe the flywheel could be missing teeth, would there be any other noticeable symptoms if this was the case?

If the flywheel was missing teeth, it wouldn't start on second attempt. Would need a rock with car in gear to move the fwheel past it's missing teeth.

Sounds like a starter. U did go for a new starter?

well this one has me quite puzzled, it has a brand new starter fitted problem continues, you dont need to rock the car to get it to go, just turn the ignition off and try again occasionally 2 or 3 times then it starts, could it be a power problem. maybe a poor neutral on the solenoid (i dont think this is the case, as im pretty sure the solenoid has to be fully energized for the motor to run) just clutching at straws here trying to come up with a few options to check before i have to go back out in the cold to pull it to bits again, lol
