Default Focus Gearbox problem

Hi All,

My focus has been making a grinding noise for a while now and it's slowly getting wores. The garage thinks it's the gearbox, but I just wondered if someone had another idea.

The Sympotoms are this:
  • At slow speeds with any gear engauged there is a griding noise, but it's in a rhythum, like for example if you had a nail in a tyre so only makes a noise at a certain point in the rotation.
  • With the Clutch pushed down the noise stops.
  • If you turn the wheel to the left the noise stops.
It's a Mk1 1.8 Diesel.

Any ideas
