Default 2.5 Duratec L5 five-cilinder in a MK4 Escort?

Well think my idea's for my mk4 XR3i's resto are going out of the box....

I'm allready on the hunt for 2.0 zetec's and Duratec's, saw this 2.5 ST engine laying around.... got that would be

anyone got any idea's on this? I'm blank bout what to modify, what box 2 use, etc.

For logics, if it would be easy then it must have been done before, but here, there's always a first time isnt it?

I don't think it would fit in FWD format. I think someone on here tried with a MK5 Escort, and it was just too long!

v6 would be easier as it's 3 cylinders long, there's probably more chance of fitting the 2.5 5 pot inline in the bay but that's a whole different ball game!

Saab turbo, honda vtec, bmw mini cooper s engine, VAG 20vt aren't popular conversions but would fit, have you thought about putting a new TDCI engine in?

Ugh... feel the same here...

On-topic, yeah i think the lump is way to big, would need to chop a fair bit out of EVERYTHING under the bonnet to make everything fit, and then there is the gearbox issue, the drive shafts, width of the car....

Think I'll stick to a 2.0 four-banger zetec or duratec....

It could be done, but you'd need a blank canvas.

To do it properly you'd want to brace the front end so it stays square and doesn't twist, then cut everything from the heater motor panel to the crossmember out, so you're just left with the bulkhead, outer wings, front panel and chassis leg stub sections.

Lift the 2.5 in with it's own gearbox on the subframe etc so it sits in the right place, frame around it so it makes a new front end around subframe. Then use focus hubs, brakes, suspension strut/strut tops etc and shorten original shafts, cable gear linkage is a doddle. If the original shaft splines will fit into the mk4 hubs (which i doubt, but possible), then you could modify the original mounts and parts with the shortened shafts to save some money.

This would be easiest if you can get hold of a salvage focus to cut a few chunks out of like the lower arm mounts etc to save time and effort. You'd end up with a semi-space framed front end, leaving plenty room for pipework, wiring etc.

It can be done, and relatively easily if you've got the time. And yes i've thought about this in some detail cause i think it'd be AMAZING.

On the subject of Duratec, if you need any ideas on mounts, i've converted my inner wing to take a Blacktop zetec or duratec mount.

If I was to go to all that trouble, with a full space frame front end, I'd be running custom suspension links and the full works.

However, I still think space would be tight! And if you went through all that, you might as well make it RWD to be honest.

That's true, but it'd be the same amount of work again on top for the rwd bits. Does the 2.5 appear in RWD form anywhere?

It's probably in the X-Type Jag, not sure if they do them in RWD but there is an AWD version

**edit sorry, I thought for some reason you were asking about the 2.5 v6

i bought a focus st engine for my mk5 escort as one came up dirt cheap, once it got here and i measured it up it was a very tight fit!

im sure it can be done as there was a mk6 fiesta on ebay which had the 2.5st engine in but itll take alot of fab work to make it work, something i didnt want to be doing with the tools and knowledge i have..

its deffinatly possible, anything is with cars but you have to know what your doing

The rear from a kuga is usually used for that conversion, not a granny mate.

Makes sense, seen as the Kuga is a Focus underneath, Ford trialed it's 4x4 system with the RS, but decided against it as it did not need it and would have put the price up.

I've read/heard about a firm that will convert a focus rs or st to 4wd using Kuga 4x4 parts, apparently it all bolts straight in perfectly, no fabricating involved.

Wolf tuning in germany. Kuga rear axle and modify the gearbox to add a transfer box. Rear axle sits about 3mm further forward i believe

theres a 100e pop with a st 2.5t drysumped with vipec in the resto section.....

as above i would spaceframe the front end but make it full adjustable at the sametime.....

anything is possible, i know of a mk4 escort cab with a 2.0ltr zt in the boot on a mondeo subframe, and have seen a k20 vtec in a fwd escort.....

i wanted to do this very conversion when an engine came up cheap on here
