on my bros old zetec engine his oil pump failed and the top end started knocking i was wondering if the the bottom block would be still ok

Depends if the pistons tried to seize up, how much metal hit the crank, big ends, main journals etc, needs to be stripped down, looked at, if it's alright, all cleaned out and re-assembled with new shells and pump.
