can the wrong oil make a turbo leak/smoke???
i have been having a nightmare putting a cossy back together, everything was fine when it was taken off!!!!!
anyway to cut a very long story short i have just started to run the engine and there is oil leaking down the exhaust housing on the outside of the turbo looks to be coming from a bolt at the bottom of the housing, it is most definately not coming from the feed or return pipes there is a bit of blue smoke from exhaust on tickover
the turbo was new and only covered couple hundred miles and has been sat on the shelf for about a year
not sure what oil was in the engine before, i have put in 10/40 now
i havent even driven the car yet as ive only just put it together after an engine build

I wouldn't worry unduly at this stage, just give it some time running, ie a few hours to see if it settles down, oil could be from many things, especially after rebuild.
A thin oil like a 10W40 will of course get past sealing surfaces like the rings when new, to start with, the cross hatch hone on the bores is there to hold oil to aid ring bedding, but a 10W40 semi is what I use for running in, though modern fully synthetics are totally fine for running in, older ones could be a problem, but the deletion of a vast amount of ZDDP saw to this loss of protection.
