Default Twin 40's spitting & coughing (mainly when cold) 1600 xf

Please any advice welcome.
But not that new to the Kent engine, but very new to my car, and never had twin sidedraughts before.
A couple of questions if you don't mind.
1) My carbs tend to spit & cough a lot, especially when cold. Is this normal?
2) The car pops and bangs a lot via the exhaust on the overrun - again is this normal?
3) I'm running SUL, is this ok for a '96 xflow?

I have a feeling that the mixture is possibly too rich. - or am I miles off? - please help.
Many thanks
Tim

Tim,
Spitting and coughing is indication of weak mixture.
It's useful to establish whereabouts the spitting is occuring in relation to throttle position/load/rpm, to establish what you need to adjust to solve the problem.
The carbs essentially have a 2-stage jet system - idle jets control the mixture at idle and low-load low throttle openings. The main jets (in conjunction with Emulsion Tubes) then take over to control mixture in the midrange to high load conditions.
So if the popping is happening at idle or low-load conditions (which is the most usual) then the idle jet size needs increasing for example.
The popping at the exhaust on overrun is often due to ignition timing being too retarded.

Thanks Richard.
at idle btw, or very marginal throttle, mainly when cold.
so - I turned out each mixture screw about 1/4 of a turn, and it's all but stopped.

As for the popping on the overrun, and the ignition being too retarded? - really?

it's probably timed for std unleaded, as it's a 1996 engine, but i'm using Optimax or SUL constantly now. Do you think I could advance it a bit (and gain a bit of power too)? - btw there's no vacuum advance - which i'm sure you know.

any more information greatly appreciated.
