Default rear end clunk!!

When pulling away under heavy right foot there is a clunking noise from the rear right of my 3 door ,.I was convinced it was the dif. However today i had the car jacked up and when turning the off side rear(in the air) it would spin freely for about 4" then clunk!!
The near side was ok (no play).
I took the car out and gave it a thrashing and only when droping the clutch dose this hapen if driven normaly it is not evident.

would this be the drive shaft that is worn or something else .
All help appreciated

hello mate
i had a similar problem with my old xr4x4 it turned out to be a "dry" cv joint on the back, all i did was pump some fresh cv joint grease in to it and it solved the problem
cheers nick.

i'm getting a similar thing on my sapphire at the moment too, only really does it on a harsh gearchange when taking up drive of coming off the power suddenly.

i'm thinking it's likely to be a U/J but until the concrete gets above -3 i'm not gonna be crawling under to have a look!

It does sound like a diff problem, Two options

1) take the back plate off and have a looksee, may find some spare teeth inside.

2)Give it one more Hard launch that will prob finish the fooker off

been and done that on sunday still breathing
So ,i have had it up on the ramps at a mates garage and he thinks that the u/v joints are dry,so they all got a good greasing, has quietend down some what.
My mate says that some play on take up is normal and didnt think it was exsesive,so we shall see how it is if the rain ever stops
