my gear box drones constantly from 20 mph louder to 50/60 then starts tailing off around 75 ... still there further up speedo but not as loud. changed f wheel bearings . still no joy. local garages pissing me off with the oh well your 35 an hour for diagnosis when i know its tranmission related.
the noise goes away when you turn left (weight shifts right)
could it be diff bearings or driveshaft ...
considering just buying second hand box and getting a garage to fit it with new clutch at same time but dont want to shell out to find that noise is still there
apparently mk3 has subframe that needs removed to get box off then re alligned when fitted sounds expensive and i dont fancy dismantling my car in garden
has anyone any pointers or has anyone had same problem

my mate has one, his sounds horrendous, his is the diff bearings, his has been like that for months, but he refuses to pay to get it done till its totally fooked, ive told him the sound is very loud, and embarrasing, said he doesnt care, it drives

 

lol well im gettin to the point that its gettin right on my tits, im not overly bothered by cost of new clutch or box just fitting it i hate paying mechanics as MOST of them are lazy bastards that dilly dally about and put down extra hours...im at college trying to get apprenticeship as mechanic lol

 

change it your self there not hard to do

 

its just 1 the weight and 2 the subframe... apparently they need alligned

 

edited above post as just had thought half the people on here ar mechanics lol
just annoys me that when you go into garages everyone says there busy but no one ever does anything except 1 guy running about mad ... maybe just going to wrong garages
