Only one type of Box for the ST170 and it is a getrag MT285, there are two types of clutches though, early models like yours had a smaller clutch plate, later ones had a larger clutch plate, the smaller ones tend to slip. There is a metal blanking plug on the front of the box, park the car on level ground, undo the plug and the fluid should be just up to the lip of the hole. Best thing to do is buy some new fluid and squeeze it into the hold until it starts running out, then you know its at the right level

Thanks for the quick reply, i thought that looked like it but best to check.
If i wanted to completely renew the oil is this an easy job as well, not had propper look for drain bung on the box yet?

You know what im not sure about a drain plug, i had the drive shafts out when i removed the box in my ST170 and the fluid drained out this way. A HUGE MASSIVE TIP though is put you gearbox fluid in a bottle with a squeezy top, you have to fill the box through a hole that is horizontal so the best way is to do it via this method. Ford gearbox fluid only though, dont let people fool you with royal purple fluid or anthing like that. Ford stuff is the best.
