Default focus, no drive

sister's 1.8 petrol mk1 focus broke down last night, i went to have a look. there is no drive to the wheels, engine runs you can select gears (crunches into reverse) and there feels to be pressure in the clutch system (no leaks from the master cylinder).
i was thinking slave cylinder but now im not sure as the pedal returns.

anyone got any suggestions???

If it were the slave cylinder you would not be able to select gear at all unless the engine was switched off, same applies for release bearing. It sounds like something to do with the assembly like a pressure plate fault.
