Default Metering unit

Hello folks

How do you know when the fuel metering unit is knackered?

Is there some signs when its on its way out?

Just wondering as a local garage to me was saying about changing it and a fuel relay that sits in the dash.
I said that the car pops well on over rev and that the battery was being drained by something and he mentioned those 2 things

Help please if you can

The metering unit either works or not, it's simply a flap that moves in repsonse to air movement, to which it has a valve connected inside which alters the fuel at the same time as the air, ie more air more fuel, the flaps sometimes stick, but normally a ring of gunge around the plate inside, carb cleaner soon sorts it.
This is not remotely connected to any battery draining issue though.
