Default Focus Newbie - Hesitation ????!!!!

Forgive me if this has been answered before, I'm new here..........

After a good few years stuck with jap motors, I've finally had an epiphany and returned to my first love, Ford.

Needing something practical to ferry my two young grandchildren around in meant five doors was essential so this, added to the fact that I'm very skint, has led to the purchase of a 1999 Ford Focus 2.0 Ghia.

The car has a "hesitation" problem, which is best explained by saying it has a big "flat spot" - this happens most when changing gear, but has happened when crusing at a constant speed on the motorway.
I've looked around on the net to try and identify the fault and suspect it may be the coil pack. Anyone care to confirm the possibility ? Should I be looking anywhere else - fuel pump etc ? The car also seems to run very cool - does this indicate anything ?

I'd appreciate any advice - from reading other posts on here it does seem that there is a lot of knowledgeable people on this site.

Thanks in advance.

Peter

Coilpacks are very prone to giving up, around £35 new from ford, have a look at the plugs also, in case they are bosch, if so bin them and use fords own, also have a look at the porcelain part of the plug to see if it has streak marks like jagged lightening going from the main metal body to the top, a orangey ring is normal if present but no streaking this indicates it is leaking(electrically) another common zetec problem, cured by using silicone brease on the inside of the plug boot where it goes over the plug.
Other things to look at include fuel filter if old, is the MAF dirty, clean with carb cleaner if it is, don't under any circumstances poke it with anything, this will break it.
