Default Help!!!!! St170 focus

Just about to buy a 1.6 focus with a st converstion. It's got the engine but the gearbox is 1.6 with rs focus diff and st driveahafts. The speedo isn't working and I'm wondering is it the wrong sensor in the box or could it be the standard rear axle with the wrong abs sensor? Need help asap before I commit to buy, any ideas?
Cheers terry.

The gearbox is most certainly NOT from a 1.6 with an FRS diff as the FRS diff is for it's MTX75 gearbox, and the 1.6 uses and IB5. Also ST170 driveshafts don't fit either the ib5 or mtx75 without modification. Ask some more questions!

The mystery deepins, thanks for that, it's a 5 speed box with very short ratios tried it last nite vs a frs and we found it's was quicker 1st and 2nd than the rs, doesn't add up somehow

As in accelerates quicker or achieves a higher speed for same output rpm?

accellerates quicker very sharp in 1st and 2nd, from driving the rs id have to say diff behaves exactly the same way, its odd

The acceleration doesn't necessarily relate to the gear ratio though - the ST170 doesn't have to wait for a turbo to kick so could well accelerate better from idle to, say, 3500rpm. Gears convert and input speed to an output speed, so the only way to know based on in-car performance is if it does the same road speed for a given rpm.

You can get an ATB for an IB5, I think, and can certainly get one for an ST's getrag box. So it's more likely one of those options.

Either way, the sensors won't be massively expensive so maybe just go for it?

Cheers mate, I've soursed a cheap st box now so I think I'll go for the focus, have a list of stuff to put right on it as it's been lien in a hay shed for 2 years lol but it's very good money clocks showen 38k miles which isn't rite buts it's only a year of weekend driven off so fuck it, if ther is a good diff in the 1.6 box I'll keep it for when I build a zetec turbo ka. Thanks again
