Default wheel bearing

i have an escort 55 diesel van on a s plate, how can i tell if my rear passenger wheel bearing is going, as there is like a knocking, rattling noise when i drive, the van is empty, i would take it to a garge but i dont trust the garages where i live

is there a way i can see if its going with out taking it all apart

cheers

jack it up with the hand brake off but in gear so u dont flatten yourself then with the wheel on give it a good yank in all directions . if ur getting a rattle then u should feel alot of play in it. easy enough to change so dont panic to much if it is fooked . just wouldnt drive it. Cheers Ally

As above one of the easiest jobs to do, don't need a press at all, though I suppose some garages have to justify thier charges!!
