I don’t know if it’s possible, but if it is, it will be tight. Getting the sump off when engine is on an engine stand is tricky enough. The 8mm bolts that hold the sump onto the block are quite small, and some are hidden away, so will need a long extension to get in. With the cross member in place, I think you’ll have difficulty getting to these. The front half shafts will need to be removed, so you’ll have to pop the bottom ball joints in the swing arms in order to move the hub back enough to get the half shafts out, and in order to get the front diff out. (Remember to take the circlip off the half shaft inside the diff before trying to pull the shaft out.) Hmm, just thinking about it, I don’t know if I’d like try that.

But good luck if you have a go. My engine is in pieces at the moment, so if you want any pictures of certain parts, just ask, and I’ll post them for you. By the way, I have a LHD as well, so might be useful.

Cheers
John

Yes, I think you’re right. Taking the cross member off isn’t that difficult, and would sure make life a lot easier.

Cheers

You will need to take the engine out or remove the cross member

You don't need to remove the engine. But you've got to remove the steering gear. Wait a mo and i'll post up some details.

Okay, good news, you don't need to remove engine, but you definitly have to remove the steering gear.

Bad news, to remove the crossmember you got too undo the engine mounts and jack up the engine to relieve tension and pressure on mounts and crossmember. Then you undo the necessary bolts and pull out the crossmember. The only problem I can see is once the crossmembers out the jacks carrying the majority of the weight and i'm not sure if its safe to allow the engine to rest on the mounts without the crossmember in place.

In short you may have to remove the engine.
