My mate had the same problem with his cossie. Turned out the bulb for battery icon had blown in dash and apparently that part of the charging system, hence the circuit was broke.

Dont know if it could be same on your van but worth chaecking ?

As said make sure you have battery light, btw on Cosworths this is common for wire to break, will still charge if revved hard enough as field windings get excited. If you have battery light and it goes out once running it will be cable from alt to batt. Probably there was nothing wrong with old Alt.

Relised that it's Diesel as well make sure you haven't mixed cables as Diesels normally use one terminal to feed tacho. (If applicable)

What is the charge rate ?, put the car up on ramps at front connect metre to live at solenoid and earth on metal, with the blue wire OFF start the van, then get underneath, and just watch the metre, now briefly touch a LIVE onto the alternator terminal marked IND, this is where the dash warning bulb connects to, it should then energise and start charging, if revved high enough it will start the charge cycle as well, as they have a resistor built in for a fail safe, if after touching a live onto IND it does nto start outputting even though it is rotating and connected ok it is duff.
