Default RS1800i - Poor Starting

Guys

The missus came in tonight to say her M Reg RS1800i had been a bitch to start and she'd had to use a jump pack as it had almost flattened the battery.

Now it has had a problem over the last few weeks where you'd go to start it and it wouldnt quite catch and the starter would just spin, and then you'd crank it again and it would be fine, which I had put down to a worn starter problem, but as it would go on the second turn of the key I hadnt done anything about it.

Anyway tonight, we went out for a meal, and out side the kebab shop it would crank, go to fire and then the starter would just spin.

It just wouldnt quite catch and fire, but you could hear it was going to start and a couple of times I thought it was going to fire and it would just chug and then die.

Eventually had to get the jump pack on it again and after another few turns of the key it eventually started.

Once it fired it ran fine, drove lovely and smooth no problem but once you turn it off its a bitch to start again.

Is there any way of code reading it in case there is a sensor fault ? Or is this more likely to be a starter problem as you cant just sit and crank it for like 30 seconds it will only crank for a few turns and then it goes to fire and the starter just spins

Any ideas would be good, she's got to go to work on Monday and needs the car.

The starter solenoid sounds like it is sticking, and not getting a decent feed, will need stripping to clean out, and may even need a new terminal on the solenoid feed wire.

Cheers Tabetha, checked the wires and contacts, replaced the starter, job jobbed.

It was the original Ford one on it, so it had done 15 years service.

But what a bugger to get at the bolts, you would have thought a captive nut or two in the gearbox mount would have been the order of the day.
