I was told by an auto electrician that I had what was a common fault on a ka which was water ingress into the ecu which rots the terminals away. He said that I will have to replace the ecu and the loom or part of.

The problems started with wipers going fast then slow, headights bright then dim and all the dash lights coming on. this then resulted in us breaking down as the engine cut out.

I have got the ecu out so far and can see that there is a screw holding the terminal block in position, the only access to this screw is from inside the ecu. I have unpicked the seam hold the ecu casing together and exposed the circuit board but can't see the screw head yet, not sure what to do next.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

 

The only thing is the ecu doesn't control the warning lights, it does control the charge rate of the alternator, so could account for the differening speed of wipers and the dim bright of the headlights.
Can you see any rot/damage, I'm not even sure where the ecu is on the KA, I'll have a look in the morning as looking at one anyway.

The I cannot see any corrosion at this point but if I can find out how to get at the screw to get the connector block off I will have a better view.

 

I've got a head lights on and off issue too at the moment on mine. I'm fairly sure that the issue is from water ingress to the fuse box. I've had a few times where there has been lots of water on the fuse box, so I think it'll have buggered a relay or two and they are rusty and intermittant.

I'd start with the relays which are on top of the fuse box. You need to undo the screws which are on the fuse pannel and then pull the fuse box down to get to the relays.

I'll dig out a haynes manual at some point and work out which relay its likely to be and update this if i remember.

Water in a fusebox can certainly cause all this, are you sure he said ecu and not fusebox ?

Thanks for your advice, I have dropped the fusebox, removed all of the fuses and relays and checked all the terminals, no corrosion found and no signs of water.
