Default XR3i cabby wont start

i have a 1985 escort cabby xr3i and am having some trouble with her! she starts fine 1st thing on a morning when the engine is cold but once it has been running for a while if i turn engine off i can start it back up within 30 seconds but say i pull over and go into a shop, when i come to start it again it seems to turn over forever then fires into life i think it maybe somthing to do with the warm start regulator but i really dont know. any ideas will be most welcome, thanks in advance

Id try and recreate the problem on your driveway run it up to temperature switch it off wait a couple of minutes like you would be going into a shop then just unplug the warm up regulator if it fires straight up theres your problem

rite guys an gals, sorry in the delay in posting back. in regards to xrmalin's post to recreate the problem on the drive i did this and un plugged the warm start valve and still nothing happened (took ages to fire up again) once running i let it warm up again and this time i i unplugged the cold start valve and it fired on 1st turn of the key!! so obviously this is my problem but what i dont get is why, could it be the car thinking the engine is still cold so its flooding it hence not firing up, as also ive noticed it starting to smoke out the exhaust and liquid dripping out the tailpipe
comments/help welcome as always
