Default intermittent missfire when tach is connected

hello, i have a electrical glitch that i'm hoping someone can help with. i have a 1996 escort cosworth that i have converted to L8 management. i have now also had a wasted spark driver fitted to the ecu and i am using the original eecIV coil packs. my problem is that when i connect the wire from the coil pack sub loom to pin 21 on ecu multi plug that is for the tachometer i get a completely random missfire. when i say missfire it's not like having a dodgey plug lead sort of missfire, it's almost like it loses the spark completely. but only for a split second then runs perfect for a few seconds then again dies and so on. it does it at idle and all through the rev range, it doesn't increase in frequency when i put the engine under load but it's bad enough to make the car bunny hop and back fire when you try to accelerate, as i said it seems to be completely random. when i disconnect the wire from pin 21 on the ecu it runs fine no missfires at all but the tach doesn't work. any help would be much appreciated. cheers
