Escort 16v Si Acceleration!

Hi,
I have recently brought a well looked after Escort, which I am more than happy with. It looks good, runs well and is over taking the girl-friend in the joy league!
However, even though it runs really well on short journeys and is a joy to drive, on longer journeys it seems to lag a bit when I'm in need of acceleration. Wanting a little more speed between 2.5 and 3 thousand revs its unresponsive.
I have to put the pedal to the floor at which point it jumps back to life when it gets over 3 thousand revs.
Under 2.5 thousand revs its seems to have been fuelled with Kangeroo juice.
Its my pride and joy and a thrill to own, but just alittle annoying at times!
Please help me someone

Try new plugs and leads.

Try cleaning the MAF and resetting the KAM fuse.

Sounds like the one I used to own. I think it was the fuel filter in the end. Although the work was carried out under warranty so im not 100% that was the problem.
