Question '97 Escort brakes

I've got a 1997 Escort GTi which I've had for just over a year now,and I am just about to put new discs on the front for the third time since I have owned it,alright it's had a bit of hammer (I've lost count of how many pads its gone through) but to put it simply, the brakes on this car are crap, even when they are fully-functioning with new discs, pads, drums and shoes they still leave a lot to be desired and my faith in them is deteriorating fast.Next time round I want to uprate the brakes to bigger discs and calipers, and basically I'm wondering what's a good upgrade to go for without having to go to great lengths to get it to fit?I've heard Focus ST or Escort Cossie set-ups will go on without too much hassle,or are bigger aftermarket drilled/grooved discs and calipers a better option?I did consider a rear disc conversion, but from what I can gather it's more of a visual mod and doesn't make much (if any) difference to braking performance.I've currently got 16" alloys on which I plan on keeping if possible unless the brake mods require a size change? Also,is it worth lowering it (with a coilover kit) BEFORE attacking the brakes,or does it make no odds?Any help greatly appreciated thanx Tezz
