Default engine year

got an 2.0l mondeo engine silver top. think it is an 1998 engine but is there any way of knowing the specific year cause they have different stuff up to 5/98 and after 5/98. ant help is very welcome.cheers

silvertop is up to 98 i think

Blacktop was introduced on Manufacture Date 1/6/98. Initially with an alloy cam cover before it changed to plastic (and a few other minor mods) about a year later, so don't go by that.

Obvious differences on the Blacktop are that the oil filter is screwed direct on the block, and waterpump & its drive are offset from the centre of the engine to the front.

if the engine no. is still on the engine you can tell what month and year the engine was built

True, but whilst the year code is almost easy, the sequence of the month code is a bit

As the real query was actually about whether it was a Silvertop or Blacktop, I thought it's easier to compare





the oil filter mounting rather than the '98 (W) 'sequence' of
April - WT
May - WJ

June - WU
July - WM
