Hi there, got an annoying problem with my freshly installed zetec turbo.
Now being a tight git (read skint) I fit it all myself into my Escort after buying the engine etc off Ebay. It's fitted with a rover inlet and erst exhaust.
1st problem I had to address was that the breather had been blocked off at the front and another put on the rear of the block. Now since my gearbox is a rear starter I blocked off the rear breather and welded on a nice pipe to the original front location.
This pipe i've then joined to the breather pipe coming from the head then it's a y-piece to a small k&n breather.
All was fine for a few days then it started what appeared to be steaming from the breather.
It wouldn't really matter how hot or cold then engine was either.
It would lose about a pint of oil each hour of driving and naturally's made a nice mess....
Anyone any ideas why this is happening?
I've stuck the breather pipe direct into a bottle and it's showed me just how much oil is coming out.
Perhaps the headgasket's failing as i've a slight water loss and the top rad pipe doesn't ever seem to get solid as it has done with previous engines.
Wont hurt me to do a compression test dry then wet I guess...
I'd be grateful for any ideas.
Thanks for reading,
Karl.

Well, changed the headgasket yesterday.
No change unfortunately.
It's a 15 mile trip back home from the garage I did it at and it's put about 3/4 of a litre into my oil catch bottle.
I don't get it as there's no smoke from the tailpipe, the actual pressure on tickover blowing out of the breather is pretty low but just lots of fumes and almost instant from cold too.
I'm stuck and thinking about getting rid as i've had enough.
Could ring wear show up as this? I thought if rings had gone it'd smoke loads...?
Karl.

Thanks for the reply btw

Have you done a compression test?, Sounds like crankcase compression which could be down to rings/piston, Is it breathing heavily from the top? or just the bottom breather?

I had the same problem ans it was my breather (top left of the rocker cover). I put a new one on and it cured it. I think the filter or baffle inside had given up but i have not had any problems for 1000's of miles.
