Default WHATS A CONDENSER?

not sure wot this is? they have them in halfords, they are tiny little gold things with a couple of wires coming out of them. are they the things you put on the alternator to stop interference?

its basically the word for capacitor when used on cars. used on old skool cars across the 'points' to reduce wear through arcing, but can be also used as a suppressor to prevent electrical interference (radio buzzing type stuff) if connected close to the source e.g on altenator etc. why, you got interference?

alternators don't generally have a negative they normally ground through the body to the block, it's imposible for me to say without pics, but if there is only one wire out of the supresor then that would go to the +ve output of the alternator the thick wire and the supressor would bolt to the alternator
but if you're hearing the engine through the speakers it's more likely you have a seperate fault as most alternators i've seen e.g the bosch ones on a cossie , have a suppressor already on, although i supose this could have become open-circuit.
did the stereo ever work properly or have you just fitted it?
mind you if that one cures the fault then end of problem...
other thing you might wanna do is check all your earths e.g. battery to shell etc
let us know how you get on, pics wouldhelp

If your using the lives and earths that were already behind the stereo, disconnect them and tape them up. Take a direct fused feed from the battery and an earth to the stereo with the wires just on the outside of the car and rev your engine to see if it still does it. If that sorts it you know that its the wiring inside your motor thats not perfect.

yeah i too reckon you're probably barking up the wrong tree trying to suppress the alternator. you could temporarily take off your fanbelt and run your car for less than 10 seconds and if you stil get the noise it's not alternator

HMMM ive just disconected the speakers from the amp and the interference has stopped from the sub and i have just tried running the speakers from the headunit and it all runs perfect. why would the amp do that? ive swapped the rca's and its still only the speaker amp that interferes. confusin!
