Default Orion Ghia damp running problem

Hey, I've had my '88 Orion 1.6i Ghia (MFi) for a few months now and have run it every day with no problem at all. Only now the summers over and it pisses down every night the car won't start in the damp mornings. When i do eventually get it going it splutters and backfires and runs on what sounds like 2 cylinders when you give it any quantity of throttle. Usually it clears and runs perfect once warned up. I put new plugs and leads on it a couple of months ago so it shouldn't be them. I have an '87 XR3i I could try swapping some bits to eliminate the problem if need be. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Cheers, Peter.

Distributor cap would be favourite, as this can cause cross firing etc if damp inside, drill a small 3/4mm hole carefully on the underside of it, this serves to equalise the temps outside/inside the cap and so stop moisture condensing on the inside, which will be nice and hot when driven, then gets hit by rain that cools it.
