Saw an item about this on watch dog a quick fix is to spray WD-40 or contact cleaner on the circuit board but this means taking it out of the dash.
it is electric as far as i know.
Apparently ford will replace the unit for £99 but i can't work out if this is just 2003 effected units or not.

 

my wifes speedo dosent work on he focus
is the speedo drive on a t reg1.8 focus cable or electric
and is it easy to fix
