Default Hitting a brick wall here... what could the problem be?

The car was working fine all day, no problems and had a great drive. I decided to go home to make some tea. After i needed to nip out to the Supermarket, on the way out i went to fire her up and just kept turning over over, wouldnt bump start etc.

I left it for 20mins and tried again and it didnt start up but very nearly did (struggled). So the only thing i could do was get the AA out to tow me home.

So he came and i was guessing it was either the spark plugs or the fuel pump.

The HT leads are new and the plugs were fine.

He seemed to think it was the fuel pump as its not priming up and you cant hear it. He tried a direct live (in case the fuse had gone) from the fuel pump to the battery to see if it was a broken cable but got nothing..... so he said its just the fuel pump thats shot and it just needs replacing.....

so i bought a new one and fitted it as the other was old anyway, and it still didnt prime or start. So i pulled the relay out and it had melted/burnt on the pin 54-15. Heres a pic of the new and old:

put the new one in and still didnt prime or start.... does anyone have any other suggestions?

have you checked the terminal you plug the relay into, they get damaged quite often, also, check you have a decent earth and haent fried any wire in the fuse box.

the terminal the relay goes into has been burnt where the old relay has and i though it could be that.

The fuses are all sound.... the earth seems good too.

Also, the car nearly starts if left there standing for a day, and then when i go to turn over again just doesnt start. So when i leave it its as the the car nearly starts, yet the fuel pump doesnt prime!!! where would i get a terminal from or test it?

have you tried locking the pump on by by-passing the relay? not sure what pins on your car it'll be but the haynes manual should tell you if you've got one. that way you can find out if its the relay/relay connectors or not.

You can test the relay by finding out which side is the trigger and which is the switch. To test the trigger you can apply 12v and listen for a click. To test the switch you need to test for continuity when the trigger is activated, you can do this using a multimeter or a test lamp if you've not got one.

If you dont already have a multimeter i suggest you go and buy one. even maplins cheapest and shittist is better than none.

JAmes.

mate......... the old fuel pump didnt. I fitted a new one last night and a new relay coz the old had melted/burnt (as you can see in the pic).

And still nothing but i havent tried a direct live and earth with the new one yet.

I never ignored your post. I took note.

lol, fucking typical. The mrs chucked my wire thought it was old crap

cant test it now.... shall see if a mate has owt to use... with the terminal being burnt and the new relay in. If the pump was to work, what would be the next steps out of curiosity so i can try the next steps without having to pester you every hour lol.

Anyone else know where to get the 2 x copper crush washers for the fuel pump/banjo bolt?
