Angry thrust bearing

hi all, i have a prob with my series 2 that ive never come across, i was driving along one night when a high pitch schreech came from under the bonnet, i put the clutch pedal down and it went away, now its developed a rumbling noise whilst driving which also dissapears when i put the clutch down, could this be a gearbox prob or clutch??
