Default Shell Prep

Spent the past week off and on doing the welding on my S2 RST.
As the car is pretty much a shell at the moment I was looking at seam welding/strenthening. Will be running a rear cage and want the car to be as solid as possible.
In a nut shell:
Can pop rivets be used in the same way as you would seam welding?

Are there advans and disadvans to each method?

Should I stop being so lazy and get on with the welding?

Thanks.
