i'm currently doing a closed loop conversion and i'm geting the lamba sensor welded in tomorrow, where has every one else fitted theres? i was thinking on the top before the down bend just after the turbo? anygood?

Yeah thats where most people av em buddy,

 

apparently there ment to go about 2foot after the turbo due to the heat as it will not read corectly i had a fitting guide somwhere ill find it if you like

Thats Rubbish Mate, ignore it. The sensor element itself is hotter than the turbo in the first place. Just prior to teh bend is fine, and it must be mounted between 9 and 3 oclock, no lower.

 

the sensor has to be at 750 deg. C to work, that's why most of them are electrically heated

 

All you have to do is look where Ford mounted theirs in the cat-equipped cossies - in the back of the turbine housing!!

 

what about EGT sensors were are they best to go?

 

Depends what you want to measure.. Technically you want it before the turbine, so you can measure the turbine inlet temperature.. but some people are worried about TC probes breaking and damaging turbos (never seen it personally).. If you put it after the turbo you have to factor in the temperature drop across the turbo.. So perhaps you could measure it before and after and then remove the pre-turbo sensor if you're worried about breakage.. at least then you KNOW the drop across the turbo

 

get a proper inconel thermocouple and they can withstand 1200 deg. C - if it's that hot in there you have more to worry about than turbine blades

 

You say that, but the turbocharger in the Focus ST is rated to 1100C!! Triple-pass cats run pretty damn hot!! (although not quite 1200C )

 

my car is going to be running off egt not lambda from emerald so it needs to be bloody damn accurate

 

It's set up with lambda and egt to start with so egt is then just a safeguard, after turbo is fine, and where mine is going, Reylan dis out of them but have now tracked own part numbers and price(£113).

It's a damn sight safer than a lambda as it reacts so much quicker.
Once set up unless other factors alter, this will give the earliest warning of anything amiss engine/fuelling wise.

From my experience, thermocouples react slower than wideband lambda sensors.

 

depends on the TC - you want a nice fat one for strength and reliability, but that wouls have a slower response time than a thin one

 

I don't think you can really rely on any one sensor, be it lambda or temperature.. both can mislead you, it's what you do with all of the sensors and your own knowledge that counts!

 

spot on mate - knowledge is king and having more sensors allows you to make a judgement based on that knowledge

 

I have the option of neither, 1, or both, so might as well use the Tech Edge I have as well as a egt.

Read what is written about using the forum then, views expressed are just that, views ie opinions, the same with any forum, nothing is a cast iron gaurantee.
