hello all my mates escort gti the temp needle is rising into the red to quickly the water is not boiling and the fans are not kicking in is this a sign the temp sensor is broken? cheers

It's quite possible that the coolant temperature sender (note, not coolant temperature sensor as that's a different kettle of fish ) is knackered. No need to start the engine - test it cold, but if you remove the plug from the sender (usually a single wire) earth it, the gauge should go straight up, or straight down depending on how it works, certainly when its disconnected the guage should read 'zero'.

Does the needle go up with the ignition on or only when the engine's running?

 

when we rebuilt the head on my m8s s2 we put the plug on the bk of the head back 2 front nd the same thing happend..????????????

 

since its gone up into the red its in the red all the time with the car switched on or off so i guessing its got to be the sender. and we didnt remove any switches prior to the problem

 

got a new sender today and still the same disconneted the battery and the needle just stays at the top of the red?

 

sounds like a faulty gauge, have you checked the wiring?
