Checking the cam and lifters etc
Is anyone able to give me a quick quide, or a link to a site that goes into it? I want to inspect my top end for damage as there is a small kock coming from there at idle. Will i need new gaskets too if I dismantle it?

Look at the Base of the lifters they should all be flat, if any are difficult to remove from the Boers they are damaged in some way... check the lobe hight on the cam ....

the knock could be a worn hydraulic tappet or a worn cam lobe or both. it can also be a bad tappet(s) where the hydraulic bit is not doing it job.
to remove the tappets is not a big deal.
first remove the rocker cover and try and save the gasket and this will the only one you may need.
each of the 8 rockers will have a nut in the middle, simply loosen the nut and remove the rocker, but keep the assembly in order, watch out for a steel piece that either sits under the nut or under the rocker, it prevents the rocker from eating into the head.
with the rockers removed simply pull up the hydraulic tappet.
check for pitting and scoring, dishing on the surface that contacts the cam, if any then replace,
to inspect the cam properly then you need to remove it which is not to big a job but see how you get on with the tappets, but if any of the tappets is badly dished or heavely pitted you can be sure the cam has some damage aswell.
put every thing back in the same order of removal and each tappet in its original hole.

Cheers that really good advice thank you. I'm fairly ignorant about all this, once its allr efitted no timing will need to be done or anything, it can be literally taken apart and put back the same way and then driven?
no timming required, just reassemble as taken apart.but generally when ever you remove parts of this nature its advisable to turn the engine over by hand to be sure nothing locks up.put a spanner on the crank pully and turn in a clockwise direction as if looking at the pully from the drivers side.start the engine and make sure ther is no leakes form the rocker cover gasket.

Cheers for that, i'll have a look this afternoon, take some pictures. I'm expecting to find damaged tappetts that have been jammed in thehead causing head damage. This is what happened to my old cam/head too.
